Herne the Hunter may be one of Britain’s strangest legends: a ghostly rider with antlers, black hounds, and ties to Windsor Forest. But was Herne a real spirit, a forgotten pagan god like Cernunnos or Odin, or something Shakespeare helped invent? 🌟 Join the Mystics: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy6v91210figZrnMvfnhZhw/join 🛒 Mythology Books, and Creator Picks: https://www.amazon.com/shop/mysteriesofmythology 👕 Merch: https://mysteries-of-mythology-shop.fourthwall.com/ ▶️ WATCH NEXT: ↳ ⚔️ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikECI8lazL0y80EqDGH_evhNOMGtsHr- ↳ 🐉 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikECI8lazL0W7QESLTLZrYyMAk91giJx In this video, we explore the legend of Herne the Hunter, the mysterious horned figure said to haunt Windsor Forest at night. From Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor to later links with the Wild Hunt, Odin, Gwyn ap Nudd, and Cernunnos, this story crosses folklore, ghost stories, Celtic mythology, and medieval legend. We look at the earliest evidence for Herne, how the myth grew over time, and whether this antlered hunter was ever part of a much older pagan tradition. ——————————————— ⏳ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 00:40 The Story of Herne the Hunter 08:20 The Playwright 11:44 The Legend Grows 15:00 The Pagan Question ——————————————— 📚 SOURCES & CREDITS: • Royal Shakespeare Company – https://www.rsc.org.uk/the-merry-wives-of-windsor/about-the-play/herne-the-hunter • Open Source Shakespeare: The Merry Wives of Windsor Act 4 Scene 4 – https://www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/play_view.php?Act=4&Scene=4&Scope=scene&WorkID=merrywives • William Harrison Ainsworth, Windsor Castle – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_Castle_%28novel%29 • Herne the Hunter – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herne_the_Hunter • Shakespeare Birthplace Trust – https://www.shakespeare.org.uk/explore-shakespeare/blogs/herne-hunter-may-day-figure-folklore/ • King’s College London: Herne’s Oak – https://sharc.kcl.ac.uk/exhibition/section-three-martyrs-and-relics/family-trees-the-merry-wives-of-windsor/hernes-oak-windsor-park-1 • Mythopedia: Herne the Hunter – https://mythopedia.com/topics/herne-the-hunter/ • Icy Sedgwick: Herne the Hunter – https://www.icysedgwick.com/herne-the-hunter/ ——————————————— 🔔 SUBSCRIBE → https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy6v91210figZrnMvfnhZhw/?sub_confirmation=1 ——————————————— 🔗 CONNECT WITH ME: ↳ 💬 Chat on Discord: https://discord.gg/erE273UZme ↳ 📱 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mysteriesofmythology/ #HerneTheHunter #WildHunt #Cernunnos #EnglishFolklore #CelticMythology #NorseMythology #GhostStories #BritishLegends #Folklore #mysteriesofmythology
