They can do this because a 40v tool will draw half the amperage as a similar 20v tool, 80v a quarter of 20v and so on. So they can use cheaper cells, thinner wire, lower amp circuitry etc to save money. Putting higher amp draw cells like found in Dewalt(Milwaukee, Makita etc) keeps the voltage sag a minimum and the tool with have far more power. Will this hurt the tool? NO. The higher the voltage is kept the lower the heat transmitted through the tool and the longer it lasts.
