Currently Playing: The Strong Nuclear Force as a Gauge Theory, Part 1: Quarks

Hey everyone, in this video series, we'll be exploring how the strong nuclear force arises naturally from local SU(3) symmetry. Today, in Part 1, we'll be easing into the subject matter, talking about quarks, looking at some baryons and mesons, and developing the concept of a quark color triplet field (which we'll later apply a local SU(3) transformation to). Along with this video, you can find the Video Notes PDF, and Animation Python codes, on my Patreon. Thank you to everyone who has signed up on there; your support means a lot and I really appreciate it! :) Patreon link: https://www.patreon.com/c/RichardBehiel 0:00 Intro 8:05 Thinking about the Atomic Nucleus 14:31 Protons and Neutrons are Three Quarks 17:50 Color Confinement 19:41 Delta Baryons imply Quarks have Color 27:02 Pi Mesons 30:14 A Review of some Hadrons 41:39 Quark Color Triplet Field Psi 55:29 Dirac Lagrangian This video references two books, "Introduction to Elementary Particles" by David Griffiths, and "Gauge Theories of the Strong, Weak, and Electromagnetic Interactions" by Chris Quigg. While the video should stand on its own, so that it's not necessary to buy these books in order to follow along, the books offer a wealth of context and additional insight, so they're worth checking out. #physics #math #grouptheory #quantum #nuclear #chromodynamics
