Before Star Trek premiered, Gene Roddenberry had already imagined its future in remarkable detail, and this early script for “The Cage” belonged to the woman who helped bring that vision to life. In this episode of Inside the Roddenberry Archive, Rod Roddenberry and Star Trek aficionado Scott Mantz examine Majel Barrett Roddenberry’s personal script page by page. Through Gene’s descriptions of the settings, the Enterprise, its technology, and its crew, we get a rare look at how he envisioned Star Trek from the very beginning. The script also reveals the earliest version of Captain Pike, then named Captain James Winter, but its greatest significance may be Majel’s role as Number One. At a time when women in positions of authority were rarely portrayed on television, Number One was presented as the Enterprise’s composed, capable second-in-command. That legacy continues today in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with Anson Mount as Captain Pike and Rebecca Romijn carrying Number One forward nearly 60 years later.
