Currently Playing: How the Russo-Japanese War Began

In February 1904, the Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on Port Arthur, the Russian Empire's Naval base in China. The lead up to this strike had been a decade in the making. This documentary looks at the lead up to the Russo-Japanese War, primarily from the Russian perspective. How St Petersburg reacted to the First Sino-Japanese War, it's reasons for constructing the Triple Intervention, and its subsequent battle for influence with Japan in Manchuria and Korea. It attempts to show how the Russian Empire went from a power that, in 1895, was able to easily deprive Japan of its recent conquests without a shot being fired and thus win goodwill with the Chinese and Koreans - to be being considered a pariah state by 1904, having drawn the worlds ire for its behaviour in Manchuria and failure to compromise with the Japanese. #history #russianempire #japan
