Currently Playing: FIVE Moon mysteries Artemis can't help us solve

Humans are going back to the Moon with the Artemis missions, not just to visit, but to eventually stay. And that’s incredibly exciting. But scientifically speaking…the missions aren't designed to answer the moon's biggest mysteries. Artemis is all about furthering human space exploration and developing a moon base, so it’s been funded for political and economical reasons, rather than to answer specific scientific questions about the Moon itself. And if you’re a scientist then that’s a big problem. Because there are so many things that we still don’t know about our nearest neighbour from how it formed, to strange flashes of light, and what’s actually going on beneath its surface. Things that tell us not just about the Moon’s history, but the Earth’s too. So in this video, we’re going to dive into five things we still don’t know about the Moon, and crucially, how we could solve these scientific mysteries, because the Artemis missions most likely won’t. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars. http://drbecky.uk.com
