edited by @GingaRunner now that you know making a cover is pretty safe, where do you get those goshdarned instrumentals to sing over? here’s the rundown: for vocaloid and vtuber songs, you’ll be able to find them in either youtube or niconicodouga descriptions! most of the time, they’ll point you to a filesharing site. here are the common ones: 1. piapro is a filesharing website owned by crypton future media, the owners of the vocaloid IP. hololive karaokes can sometimes be found here! 2. file sharing sites - sometimes you need a passcode to download these files. just use google translate on the page you found the link on and 70% of the time it’ll be there 3. the producer’s own website: this one is self explanatory! it REALLY helps if you can read japanese or infer information from google translated japanese. especially since you’ll be seeing terms like karaoke, off vocal, inst… what’s the difference rachie? karaoke generally has harmonies baked in. useful for, well, karaoke off vocal and inst are just the pure instrumental, they can be mastered or not mastered - you don’t have to worry about that until the mixing stage, so download whatever for now. otherwise if you truly cannot find it - you can ask the producer nicely and politely if you know their socials. a simple “hello can i cover the song and if so can i please have the instrumental” is good enough. just dont spam them. and don’t ask for anything stupid, like idk, remove or add instruments from the karaoke specifically for you if they seem busy. sometimes it does end up well though - for my second album meta/morphose, i asked permission from deco to use some of his instrumentals, and he sent over the unmastered tracks - unmastered tracks are better for mixing, and just. im still so grateful haha. the last and maybe better way to do it is fanmade instrumentals. same thing, if you put in “[title of the song in japanese] カラオケ” or [song name] karaoke into youtube, you will often find them. but the quality differs, and most have their own terms and conditions. you can always ask for permission to use in the comments of a youtube upload of an instrumental if you’re unsure. these instrumentals can also be found on discord, ko-fi, or even patreon. be warned though, sometimes the best fanmade insts dont have a download link. move on and find something else when that happens…. after you cry inside how about karaoke/instrumental tracks from CDs rachie? great question! and the answer is… yep, check jasrac/nextone. wow, you remembered! if they said it’s safe for streaming/delivery, you should be able to get away with just a copyright claim. to recap: youtube/nnd descriptions are your best bet for original instrumentals when that fails, scour youtube by searching “name of song + off/karaoke” when even that fails… well, i’ll get in trouble if i mention it, so i’ll just let you figure it out on your own. don’t blame me if that fails though - you weren’t supposed to do it anyway. always check jasrac/nextone if it’s ok to use! ijou desu!
