They were some of the greatest structures humanity had ever built—enormous temples, statues, tombs, and monuments that stunned ancient travelers. Yet of the traditional Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only the Great Pyramid of Giza still survives substantially intact today. What you’ll discover: • What happened to each of the Seven Wonders • Why earthquakes destroyed several ancient monuments • How fires, invasions, and religious conflict contributed to their destruction • Why ancient ruins were often reused as building materials • What happened to the Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandria • Why the Hanging Gardens remain one of history’s biggest mysteries • How the Great Pyramid managed to survive when almost everything else disappeared The ancient wonders were never destroyed by a single catastrophe. Instead, they disappeared over many centuries through a combination of earthquakes, fires, warfare, abandonment, deliberate destruction, and the recycling of valuable building materials. The Colossus of Rhodes, for example, stood for only a few decades before an earthquake toppled it in the 3rd century BCE. Its fallen remains reportedly remained visible for centuries before much of the bronze was eventually removed. The Lighthouse of Alexandria survived far longer, but repeated earthquakes severely damaged it. By the late Middle Ages it had largely disappeared, and stones from its ruins were later incorporated into the fortress built on the same site. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus also suffered earthquake damage before parts of its stonework were reused in later construction. Meanwhile, the Temple of Artemis was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times before ultimately disappearing. Some mysteries remain even harder to solve. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are known primarily through ancient descriptions, and historians continue debating their exact location—and even whether the famous version of the gardens existed as traditionally described. What makes these monuments especially fascinating is that they were never meant to become ruins. Their builders created them to impress generations, honor gods and rulers, and demonstrate the power of entire civilizations. Yet thousands of years proved stronger than almost all of them. So why did the Great Pyramid survive while the others vanished? How much of the destruction came from nature—and how much came from humans themselves? This video explores the incredible history of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, their destruction, ancient engineering, lost monuments, and the civilizations that created some of humanity’s most legendary structures.
