New discoveries have dismantled much of that stereotype, revealing skilled hunters, capable toolmakers, adaptable survivors, and close human relatives whose story was far more complicated than scientists once believed. 🔎 What you’ll discover: • Why early reconstructions made Neanderthals look primitive • Whether they actually walked hunched over • How sophisticated their tools and hunting strategies were • What evidence suggests they cared for injured group members • Whether Neanderthals created art or used symbols • How complex their communication may have been • Why their disappearance was not a simple extinction story • How Neanderthal DNA survives in people today The familiar image of a stooped Neanderthal partly came from an early skeleton belonging to an older individual affected by disease. Researchers mistakenly treated features caused by age and illness as characteristics of the entire species. Neanderthals were powerfully built and adapted to the colder environments of Ice Age Eurasia. They controlled fire, produced specialized stone tools, hunted dangerous animals cooperatively, used natural materials, and survived changing climates for hundreds of thousands of years. Archaeological evidence also suggests that some Neanderthals cared for people who survived serious injuries or disabilities. Individuals who could not have recovered alone appear to have lived for years, implying sustained support from their communities. Their symbolic behavior remains debated, but discoveries involving pigments, ornaments, modified objects, and possible cave markings challenge the idea that symbolism belonged exclusively to Homo sapiens. Neanderthals may also have possessed meaningful spoken communication. Their anatomy and genetics suggest they had important biological capabilities associated with speech, although scientists cannot reconstruct their vocabulary or determine exactly how their language worked. Science also once presented their disappearance as a clean replacement: modern humans arrived, and Neanderthals vanished. The reality was probably shaped by small populations, climate instability, competition, disease, interbreeding, cultural differences, and chance. Neanderthals did not disappear completely. Homo sapiens interbred with them, leaving traces of Neanderthal ancestry in many living populations. Their genetic legacy can still influence certain biological traits today. This video explores what science has gotten wrong about Neanderthals—and how archaeology, genetics, fossils, ancient tools, symbolic behavior, interbreeding, and changing scientific evidence transformed our understanding of humanity’s closest extinct relatives.
