Because recently it was the spookiest time of the year and I'm not just talking about tax time, Halloween. Oh. So we're talking Is that what you meant? >> That's what I mean often. >> Huh. Not always. Uh we're talking Halloween stuff uh including the upcoming Frankenstein movie which is to come to Netflix cuz it has been in cinemas. It's got a limited release. We checked that out. And also the first couple episodes of Welcome to Derry, the It prequel, where things in that small town terrorized by an alien interdimensional clown, they might not be as they initially seem. Stranger Things. We're also talking about that also. >> Oh, okay, right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I'm just saying Stranger Things. >> Stranger Things are happening. In in the town of Derry. >> What's going on in Derry? What do you think it is? Probably a gas leak. Yeah, probably. Uh next week we're going to be talking Predator Badlands cuz that's coming out, of course, and maybe a bit of Pluribus. Oh, yes. They say Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel, it's going to feature uh the villain's going to use makeup and prosthetics for the antagonist Huh. in order to uh and they need an actor with a strong build and stature uh for this particular role. Now we of course talked about last week the the Warner Brothers being sold off. >> Yeah, I mean that that that date is then up in the air of it, isn't it? >> I don't think so actually up in the air, Mason. Because Bloomberg is saying that David Ellison uh who is of course behind Paramount Uh-huh. if these two studios came together and Paramount bought them, they want to keep James Gunn. Interesting. >> Yeah. So that >> what they're saying in public. You know, obviously he really wants to restore the Snyderverse. Yeah. >> This David Ellison That's all he wants out of it. Nothing else. >> We know he's a Snyder bro. Yeah. You know? We know that. Yeah. So it still looks like Paramount has the strongest chance of We're going to be updating you every week on how this way is how which way this is going to go. Um it does still look like Paramount has the strongest chance of purchasing WB. Warner Brothers are saying I'm sorry um so I think this this still figuring out they're still bidding and bids are being rejected. It's all a tactic to get the most money, obviously. Doctor Who news? >> Doctor Who news. >> Uh Doctor Who This is an official announcement from Disney. We'd like to thank Oh, this is a Weekly Planet exclusive. Oh, sorry. No, it's uh this might be from the BBC. This is from BBC, I apologize. So, a few years ago, BBC entered into a deal with Disney to uh produce Doctor Who episodes and and distribute them on a Disney Plus platform. They basically doubled the production budget of this. They wanted a global reach. >> £10 for an episode, GOT IT. MAYBE THEY can build a costume for once, you know what I mean? >> I get it. Instead of wrapping each other in tin foil or whatever. Uh we'd like to thank Disney Plus for being a terrific global partner terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. That's a Christmas special, I think. >> Has it just been off? I don't know. I think it's just been off. Oh, maybe it is. Yeah. The BBC remains uh fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be our most one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T. Davies has agreed >> Fully committed to Doctor Who? Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. That was the one with Billie Piper, I assume. We can assure fans the doctor is not going anywhere and we'll be announcing plans for a next series in due course, which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC. Uh it average Despite Gizmodo, it averaged 3.2 million uh million No, they wish. 3.2 million viewers over the course of its eight episodes, down from the already low averages of uh Gatwa's debut. >> Oh, damn. So, yeah, not good. And as a result of this, the budget of Doctor Who will be roughly halved to what it was prior. >> Do you think they got to keep the TARDIS set? I didn't watch the second season, but I understand Here's the thing though, we both have a I would say a more than passing familiarity with Doctor Who. >> Yeah. And so, I think the problem with these last two seasons is they're too lore-heavy. Yeah. >> Like, if you don't know anything about Doctor Who and you're Maybe you're an American and you you've got Disney Plus, but you've never seen a Doctor Who, and they're like, "This is the British sensation. It's Doctor Who. It's the most incredible sci-fi show you've ever seen or whatever. It's It's an institution. It's gone for 100 years or whatever." And then you open it up and it's got There's decades of lore and they're referencing Splits into two guys. Splits into two guys immediately. Uh and you you'd be like, "There's so much" And unless you're the Unless you're the exact kind of person who loves getting into the lore. But that's the thing, you Again, you can't move the needle in terms of viewership with people who are just dedicated to one thing. Yeah, you just need You need people to go, "Oh, this is a fun show. I'm learning about the doctor as it goes. Here it is." I think I think, you know, with the benefit of hindsight and the fact that I didn't make the show, so it doesn't matter to me. Yeah. Uh probably should have simplified it. >> Yeah. Should have focused on, you know, a real clean reboot, and it should have been new adventures that don't relate to anything. It says There is more This person says there is more to the role than performing. You've got to be an ambassador for the brand and embrace being the gen this genera- that generation's doctor. Underwriter Davies, the series had cast a transgender actress features a drag queen Mhm. also had a historic gay kiss and this apparently drew some complaints who gives a [ __ ] They're always getting complaints. constantly But again I think I think it's more just that they Yeah. I think either Frankenstein's monster should have smashed Victor Frankenstein's head in with his mighty fist. Yeah, but who's the real monster? Or Victor Frankenstein should have smashed Frankenstein's monster's head in with a big pneumatic hammer. Yeah. Like a giant steampunk style hammer that And who's the real monster? He'd be like, "Surprise, I put this in my fake leg, this giant steampunk hammer. Bam." That bit where he's like I get like torn apart. That's a gooey moment. It's a gooey moment in a gooey movie. Yeah, I don't know. I kind of feel like they went I kind of feel like Del Toro went, "We've got to wrap this up in 10 minutes." Yeah. How about we just say how about we just cuz Frankenstein's monster just shows up and he's like, "Give me Give me Victor Frankenstein. I'm getting in there." And he gets in there and he's like, "Well, I'll tell you my story and how nice I am and a cool guy that I am." >> Yeah. Nobody come in. If you were someone that It is not targeting, Pennywise, Yes. what's your day like? Like are you not bothered by this? Are you mostly indifferent? Are you in some kind of fog? Like are you okay? Because it this movie open this show opens on uh a kid named Maddie and he's trying to get out of Derry and he gets in a car Yep. with a fam- he's trying to hitchhike and he gets in a car with a family and it's it's a mom and a dad and a and two kids. >> Yep. Um but then things almost immediately go off the rails because they're I don't know. Are they a Are they a regular family that gets I don't think so. consumed by demonic energy or are they demons or what's going on there? I think and I don't know. I think from what I can stand from what I can understand like the science of Pennywise. And I think they are going to get into this in this series >> Uh-huh. that well, he's not like he's not supernatural. He's like an interdimensional alien. Like he's not a demon. He's like a creature, right? He's not from hell. Right. He could be from the mist dimension, which we'll talk about a little later. Yeah. >> Cuz then the other way you're going to be like, "Wait a minute, but in this scene But it's interesting to think about it. It is interesting. Are they Were they a real family at any point? >> Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Cuz he does take on like he does take on the look of people that he have killed has killed or interacted with. He can't do that. Maddie gets in this car and then these people seem normal initially, but then they get increasingly deranged and the mom is pregnant Mhm. and then she they they all start chanting together Yeah. and then the mom gives birth instantly and bodily to a a winged baby with two heads. >> Yeah. Spoilers. Yeah. Uh and and it's freaky. Yeah. And then I'm like, "Boy, be weird if they killed a kid straight away in this in this show." And they do. And they do. Well, again, spoilers, but the kids in episode one who you think are going to be like the new Losers' Club >> Yeah. I mean, in a way they are big losers. Yeah, they lost. >> were all murdered in the cinema. big time. Yeah. So, you know, I think I thought that was like a really interesting kind of twist on like, "Oh, this is going to be the crew that Cuz they did seem like Yeah. And some of them will be. Yeah. Some of them some will come back, I Yeah. But also you see their backstories and you see their families and you're like, "Oh, well then And they're inves- and they're investigating Obviously they're going to be, you know, we're going to be seeing more of these people cuz we've seen so much of the backstory and then bam. Chewed up. >> Big baby comes out of Big Baby. I like how the baby comes out of the the the screen and it's bigger because it came out of a Oh, is that why? I thought I thought it just got bigger. >> That's stupid. It's been eating That's stupid. Yeah, all right. It's been eating steaks and milks. Maybe it's been eating steaks and steaks and milks. I think it's pretty brutal. I think the special effects are really good. >> Mhm. Yep. We've got a a couple of a couple of bros Yeah. and they're they're in the the Air Force Yes. and they've come to Derry Mhm. to work in this completely normal facility where they're where they're doing stuff in Derry. What is going on there? Stranger Things stuff. Mhm. Man, they're doing a Stranger Things in there. Yeah, yeah. Don't go in. Yeah. Just to be clear, sir, you're here to participate in the Stranger Things. We're doing a Stranger Things here. This is a Stranger Things zero origin situation. >> nobody's talked about this the last few weeks is Chad Powers. Oh, yeah. I keep getting advertised that. There's a I see a big um billboard ad for it. But the I'm in I've only seen the trailer. But in the trailer he's like, "I'm doing a Mrs. Doubtfire but for football." Mhm. Or basketball, whatever I think it's football, yeah. Okay, right. And you're excited about this? >> No, I'm not going to watch it. No. It's It feels like a premise that would work for a movie Yeah. >> but they've dragged it out to six or eight episodes or whatever. Well, that's Welcome to Derry, isn't it, Mason? Not really. I think there's a lot of story here that they're working on. So, yeah, there's this government facility which trying to They know something's going on in Derry and there's been I saw some speculation that this is a version of Project Arrowhead. Uh-huh. Which is what they do in The Mist. They open up a portal and then a bunch of terrible stuff comes out. >> Right. Yeah. So >> it ends well for everyone. Yeah, and the government are trying to They know there's some kind of fear-based energy system happening in this town. >> Like Monsters Inc. Like Monsters Inc. and they don't know what it is. And I thought, "Oh, maybe there's like maybe they're looking for like the crashed meteor or spaceship." Yeah, right. Maybe that's what they're looking So, how did Pennywise get here? Yeah, he came via a meteor. Yeah. Mhm. Through a portal. I don't know. And there's a turtle turtle stuff. I don't think I don't know if they're going to win this There's a There's a turtle costume in His nemesis is a turtle. That's pretty cool. It's a turtle. Yeah. Maybe the turtle that the universe is on the back Yeah, it might be. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, um yeah, I think that's all really interesting. And one of the people who work there is a a young Scatman Crothers who Correct. Who's He's in The Shining. He's uh Dick Hallorann in The Shining and also Doctor Sleep. Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. And so that I mean all this stuff people I mean people know this but all the lot of Stephen King stuff is like connected. You know, well it's supposed to be that I'm saying it's obviously not that but it's but this is a town where like there is like clearly racism or indifference and kids are mean and then on top of that also like there's a clown that's like a killer clown that's just like just the like layers of terrible. Yeah. Do you but I don't even think that like you know cuz there's they they haven't really delved too much into the race stuff and they will further on but I think there's just people are under this fog of like they don't care. Rebranding I don't know. Uh but they it's it's a sequel to The Nice House on the Lake which is a uh comic book series we talked about uh for the for the our podcast The Big Sandwich Comic Book Club. >> Yeah. Uh written by James Tynion the Fourth and I'll get the rest of the credits here but it's a sequel to that. Um and I I shan't be spoiling too much of it but uh if you want to read this new one you should read the first one as well. Do I need to Should you think I should re-read the original one? It's it's lovely and some of the friends he's known since high school some he's only known for a couple of years uh some of them know each other very well some are just acquaintances but he's brought them all there for a specific reason and it might have something to do with the end of the world. Might. Uh and in the sequel it's a similar situation there's an eccentric woman named Max and she has invited 10 people to a nice house by the sea. Come on, man. But so in the first Come on, man. >> In the first series all the individuals they sort of each of them's kind of an archetype there's like an author and there's an artist and there's a person of faith and etc. And in the first series they're all kind of like just misfits and they're you know they're not successful necessarily or what have you but in the new house everybody is like the top of their game. Like there's a million selling author and there's a musician who's like a Taylor Swift style super mega star and etc. So it's a different it's a different setup. Okay. >> got and we we sort of dive deep into what their deal is and why they're different. >> have like a better understanding of what's happening maybe? >> James. Maybe they do. But it's very I think it's a very the couple of series I think they're very um very compelling and I think it's an interesting cuz you read the first one. >> it. Uh and he's hasn't got a lot of work but he's married to uh Alana Haim they have two kids two boys >> Mhm. and uh they he he he doesn't have a lot of work but he doesn't seem that concerned because he spends a lot of time with he and his family they go to the local art gallery and he's got a big plan secret just his secret to get a a little crew together and steal four paintings Oh, that's fun. out of the out of the um out of the art gallery. And it's interesting some some would say this movie James is quite ponderous or or you know a little bit and some would say uh it it's very slow Yeah. >> and and boring uh but I thought it was interesting cuz what the the interesting So Kelly Reichardt who directed this I'd say she take she does like genre stuff but she has a little twist on it and what's interesting about this movie is that the heist is sort of done and dusted within the first half hour maybe and the rest of the movie is just kind of the consequences of it. It's kind of like a guy who didn't really plan this out all the way and now he has to deal with like law enforcement and and local crime and his family finding out and the repercussions of that. >> So it's not like how did he get away with it? >> No, and it's kind of it all you know This looks really good. Well, the the I guess there's probably a bunch of different interpretations but to me it felt like a guy who just decided to blow his life up because he's just to feel something. Yeah. >> such a like it's it seems like He's doing well or okay and He's just doing fine. He could just get some more carpentry work but he's just like I'm going to do this. Yeah. Um and there's like reason like you sort of learn the reason further up in the movie but it's just interesting and it just seem it just seems like such a dreary life in 1970s small town America. I'm just like yeah, you would. Yeah. You would rob a you you would rob a local art gallery and be like I don't really care what happens after this. Whatever, man. Cigarettes are cool. I can just do cigarettes. >> Cigarettes are cool. Are there cigarettes in it? Yes. >> cigarette acting? Cigarette in mouth acting? >> Yes. It's my favorite type of acting. Yes.
