Currently Playing: 1997 Iowa vs. Northern Iowa

From the game's opening drive, Iowa went unchallenged on its way to a lopsided victory over Northern Iowa. On the first play from scrimmage, Iowa running back Tavian Banks broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run, setting the tone for Iowa's brutal offensive attack. The Hawkeyes tallied 66 points, the most points scored by an Iowa team since a 63-10 victory over Cincinnati in 1990. Iowa also totaled 658 yards total offense, tying the school's 5th best single game mark. Banks finished the game with 203 rushing yards, the seventh-best single game total in Iowa history, and ranking the Bettendorf native as number-one in rushing yards per game in NCAA Division I. Banks had a touchdown run of 40 yards to start the second quarter, and caught a six-yard pass from Matt Sherman in the third quarter for his third and final touchdown of the game. Kicker Zach Bromert connected on all eight of his PAT's extending his streak to 33 consecutive. Defensive back Tarig Holman intercepted two Northern Iowa passes, and linemen Steve English, Epenesa Epenesa, and Jon LaFleur each recorded two tackles for loss.
