The videos in this series are adapted from a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a course for university jazz majors. The timeline stretches from about 1900-1970 because that was the most I felt I could adequately cover in the time allotted for the in-person course. This series is presented from the viewpoint of a jazz musician, not a historian (that is a disclaimer as much as a descriptor). The videos include many full-length clips so that you can get a deeper understanding of the music as well as the musicians who make it. Since I do not own the rights to the clips, these videos cannot be monetized, but in most cases the copyright holders do not block them. Posting them on YouTube is a labor of love for which you can express your appreciation by leaving a LIKE.

While most people know The Jazz Messengers to be a much-beloved band led by drummer Art Blakey, the group in its early incarnation was co-led by Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, who became the two quintessential hard bop bandleaders. This video traces the convoluted history of the name Jazz Messengers and forms the prelude for the next two episodes focusing on Blakey and Silver individually. It includes a cut from the 1954 album A Night at Birdland showcasing the spectacular precision and clarity of trumpeter Clifford Brown. (The title of the tune is Wee Dot.)
