During the Korean War, the People's Liberation Army created one of the strangest combat organizations of the Cold War: a searchlight regiment. Its soldiers weren't fighter pilots or even anti-aircraft gunners. Many were barely out of middle school. Instead, they operated enormous radar-guided searchlights, illuminating American bombers for anti-aircraft guns and night fighters. At first, they struggled badly. Then they began to learn. They studied their failures, revised their tactics, experimented with new techniques, adapted to American radar jamming, and gradually became one of the most effective nighttime air-defense units in the war. Along the way, they helped shoot down B-29 bombers, developed new methods for countering electronic warfare, and even pioneered bizarre "searchlight ambush" tactics that reportedly caused enemy aircraft to crash without a shot being fired. This is not really a story about searchlights. It's a story about how the Korean War forced the PLA to learn entirely new forms of warfare under combat conditions—and how one forgotten battalion became a remarkable example of institutional adaptation under fire.
