In the last episode we completely transformed the front of our 1971 International Harvester 1010D with QA1 double-adjustable coilovers on its C5 Corvette front suspension. Now it is time to finish the other half of the equation and finally get the custom QA1 4-link suspension installed under the rear. I figured this would be a two or three day project. It was not. This episode became a battle of suspension geometry, measurements, fabrication, pinion angles, shock placement, brake lines, old truck tolerances, 109-degree shop temperatures, and one particularly stupid mistake that cost me about five hours because I forgot one of the most basic measurements before starting. Measure twice, cut once? Apparently I prefer measuring 58 times because 57 wasn't enough. We finish welding the custom brackets into the chassis, reinforce the mounts, cycle the suspension through its travel, set the pinion angle, fabricate the upper shock mounts through the boxed frame, relocate the rear brake lines and finally get Johnnie back on the ground. And then we drive it. This truck has always been ridiculous. What started as an old International farm truck now has a 450 horsepower LS3, C5 Corvette front suspension, huge brakes, coilovers at all four corners and a completely custom triangulated 4-link rear suspension. But having a pile of good parts doesn't automatically make a good vehicle. This time, the math actually worked. Under hard acceleration there is no more axle wrap, no wheel hop, no driveline vibration and the truck stays straight. Through corners it is dramatically flatter, more controlled and honestly handles far better than something wearing an International Harvester badge has any right to. With a proper alignment and some real performance tires, I genuinely think this old farm truck could surprise a lot of sports cars on a racetrack. Maybe even a Corvette. This project also took considerably longer than it normally would for me. I'm still adapting to the knee injury from last year's accident, which means some days are ten minutes of work followed by twenty minutes of sitting down. It is frustrating, but projects don't have to happen at the speed they used to in order to still be worth doing. And after finally getting behind the wheel of this thing again? Worth it. Now we need to figure out what wheels belong on Johnnie. These Camaro wheels have done their job, but they aren't staying forever. Next up for Johnnie, it is finally time to deal with that exhaust because apparently I have reached the age where I can admit this thing might actually be too loud.
