So, breaking right now, US forces are striking IRGC targets in Iran after recent attempted attacks against commercial shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. So, this is on once again this afternoon and this evening in the region. Chief foreign affairs correspondent Trey Yingst spoke with President Trump earlier and he reports live for us from Tel Aviv. Hi, Trey. >> Yeah, Martha, good afternoon. Currently, the United States is conducting extensive air strikes against southwestern Iran next to the Strait of Hormuz. A variety of different targets being hit and again, this appears to be a medium-range target list for the United States trying to decrease the threats toward vessels in this critical waterway and also retaliate for the attack on US forces earlier this week. I did speak with President Trump earlier who said a new warning to Iran saying, "If they do respond, they will be hit much harder." The president went on to say, "This is a very big hit today. If it goes a third time, they're going to be totally wiped out as a country." In terms of a possible agreement with the Iranians, the president said, "I think an agreement with them isn't worth the paper it's written on. We gave them a lot of chances." And finally, the president added the USS George Washington is loaded to the gills. We are loaded up. The president talking there about the new aircraft carrier that arrived in theater last week to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. So, stepping back here, what we know tonight, the United States is striking targets in Iran. The Iranians are threatening to retaliate and the president is warning Iran against doing this. We have seen similar warnings from President Trump in the past against the Iranians talking about wiping out their country. But again, more than 6 months into this conflict, there is no sense that we are anywhere close to an agreement in the region. The president telling Fox News, "It can't even be worth the paper that it's written on." And ultimately, this tit-for-tat, the back and forth that we are seeing right now near to the Strait of Hormuz is expected to continue. Martha. >> Trey Yingst, thank you very much, Trey. And with that, we bring in retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward, former Deputy Commander of U.S. Central Command and member of the Iran Policy Project at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America. Admiral Harward grew up in Iran. Admiral, it's always good to have you with us. Thank you very much for joining me today. Uh your reaction to this latest action, military action that the United States is taking against Iran today. >> I think it's going after everything they have that can project power. There's no doubt about it. If you think about the the president's comments, it's aligned with his statement he made in the summer of '05 and in March of '06 when we started this. I think negotiations are over. There's no return to the MOU, and he's going to look for unconditional surrender. That was always his intent. And now that he's tied both military power and economic power together, I think he's got a sound strategy and can accomplish that objective. >> Yeah, I mean that may require a change in regime because they're pulling at every lever of the economy, of their military strength, absolutely every area that they can hit. I want to get your thoughts on this because today there is a meeting between Russian President Putin and Iranian President Posezhkin at the Shanghai Cooperation Summit in Kyrgyzstan. Here is a picture of the two of them. President Putin saying, "Russia stands in solidarity with the Iranian people. We admire your courage." He went on to say, "We are trying to provide you with the assistance you need. As we've discussed, we are supplying you with the necessary goods," says Putin to Posezhkin. China has also, you know, sort of had the same tone at these meetings. Your thoughts on that? >> Well, now you're a see political power come to play, and that's exactly what this is. So, Iran has always been a surrogate of Russia and a surrogate of China. They both have strategic interests in this. So, while the president's applied both economic and military power, you're going to start seeing the political power come to play, including his future visit to China. So, you're seeing the Russians double down. They need this ally. This is their second front against the West, their first being Ukraine. So, this is essential to this. And Putin needs to start start thinking, as well do as the rest of the Russian people, what does Russia look like post-Putin? And so, he's setting the stage here to make sure this ally and their front against the the West stays supported. And so, this conflict is much bigger than just the US and Iran. This is about Russia. It's about China. It's about Ukraine. All of this is tied together. >> Yeah, 100% and you you know the region so well having lived there and having been the head of US Central Command. What's your assessment right now of the position that Iran is in? Because we're hearing that more ships are making it through the sort of western side of the strait on the Oman side. Ships are getting through and we know that there's a lot a ton of economic pressure that the Treasury Secretary has put on them. How long before they'll break if you think they will? >> Oh, I know they will. There's no doubt about it. It is inevitable. We've crossed that tipping point already. Look, and you can look at what the oil markets are doing. They've remained stable, $80, Iran is going to continue to lose resources. They have none now, but more and more people can't put gas in their cars. People won't be able to heat their homes in the winter time. Food will become an issue. All this economic pressure tied with this continual military campaign will inevitably draw the regime to the ground and not so much externally, but I think more importantly internally. The people will rise up against the regime when they have the ability to do that. And there are things we can help on that side of the equation as well. So, I think all that is starting to come together and you're seeing a full uh economic, military, and political campaign coalesce against the regime of Iran. >> Yeah. I So, it's interesting to get your take on it um because of this military action that we've seen this afternoon. Likely, we have we do see that oil prices are up around 90, but as you point out um they they have sort of hovered in that region between 80 and 90 as we've seen the back and forth here.
