But if you learn scales the right way, they actually give you a huge shortcut to making better music. In this lesson I’ll show you how to make music with any scale, including the major scale we’ll learn together. The first mistake beginners make with bass scales is trying to learn them all at once. If you take on too many scales at once you’ll spread your focus way too thin. But if you go one at a time and really get a scale in your ears, you’ll not only memorize the scale, but you’ll actually be able to play better bass lines, take better solos, and better understand the music you listen to. To get you started, I’ll show you how to play the major scale, which is super super common, and foundation to a ton of the melodies and bass lines you’re familiar with. Knowing the scale shape is just the start though. Now you need to actually make music with it. I recommend learning melodies from songs you know as a starting point, which will free you from the constraints of laying down a bass foundation so you can hear all the different notes of the scale. But don’t just read the tab. Learning melodies and bass lines that use the scale you’re learning is only really useful if you analyze what notes you’re playing. I’ll show you how to do this when you’re learning a new melody. Now how to get this into your bass lines? We’ll drawn on wisdom from some great bassists before us and analyze a few great bass lines that use the major scale, so we can “borrow” (read: steal) some ideas for our own lines later. Finally we’ll put it all together and try out some bass line ideas using the major scale, without sounding like BassBot. Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.
