The connections between Diddy and Coco are: 1. Both are younger partners of non-verbal mammalian platformer heroes (Diddy is Donkey Kong’s best little buddy / Coco is Crash Bandicoot’s little sister). 2. Both live on tropical islands with the main heroes (DK Island / Insanity Island at first before later moving to Wumpa Island). 3. They collect their favourite fruit for extra lives or to unlock extras (bananas / Wumpa fruit). 4. They would also encounter a sentient being made of this fruit (Diddy helped Xananab, a banana alien from Planet Plantaen in DK: Jungle Climbers / Coco solved the crime of Von Clutch’s Motorworld, that the culprit was Willie Wumpa Cheeks, a mutated Wumpa Fruit employed as the theme parks mascot). 5. Both were helpful in defending their homes from evil supernatural masks (the Tiki Tak Tribe / Uka-Uka). 6. Both have gadgets to help the main characters such as weapons that use food (Peanut Popguns / Fruit Bazooka), jetpacks and different vehicles. 7. As a result, they are considered the quick-thinking partner to the stronger but simpler-minded leads (Diddy usually aids Donkey Kong by using his Rocket Barrels and Peanut Popguns while DK just relies on his strength, excluding his Coconut Gun in DK 64 / Coco hacks systems and builds gadgets in different games). 8. Both also have tiger allies in key adventures (Diddy’s childhood friend Timber the Tiger asks him for help against Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing / Coco adopts a tiger named Pura to help in levels and the N. Gin boss fight in Crash 3: Warped). 9. Both, funnily enough, would run businesses to help the main character (Diddy and his girlfriend Dixie hosted Rambi Rumble in ‘DK Bananza’ so DK and Pauline could get another Banandium Gem / In the DS version of ‘Crash of the Titans’, Coco runs the Evolution Kisok so Crash can get upgrades). 12. Both are the player 2 characters in various games (DK Country, DKC2, DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze / Mind Over Mutant and Crash 4: IAT multiplayer mode). 13. Though they would eventually take the lead in certain games (Diddy stars in ‘DKC2: Diddy’s Kong Quest’ in which he and his girlfriend Dixie rescue DK from the Kremlings / Coco became fully playable in ‘Crash 4: It’s About Time’ and because she talks more, she has a more engaging role in the story compared to Crash’s ‘go-with-the-flow’ behaviour).
