As mentioned in the video introduction, Marty has designed some incredible Rat Run merchandise: https://cracking-the-cryptric-shop.fourthwall.com/en-gbp/collections/rat-run And you can hear Simon recite the story so far here: https://youtu.be/kCF9uLrsEus *** TODAY'S PUZZLE *** Where do we start? Some years ago, Marty Sears released a sudoku puzzle about the adventures of a little rat, Finkz, and a story commenced. Tonight, with the 40th puzzle in the series, that story reaches its epic conclusion in the most extraordinary way. Marty has done it (yet) again: a puzzle of staggering complexity, wit, size (!) and imagination in we, once more, are tasked with finding a way for our rat to reach the cupcake. Oh and can we mention that this is the longest single video we've ever released on Cracking The Cryptic?! Simon was NEVER going to give up on this one!! Play the puzzle at the links below: https://sudokupad.app/nfqumwpslw Rules: Finkz must reach the cupcake by finding a path through the maze. The path must not visit any cell more than once, cross itself, or pass through any thick maze walls. As well as moving orthogonally, Finkz may move diagonally if there's a 2x2 space in which to do so, but may never pass diagonally through a round wall-spot on the corner of a cell. Fill the grid with the digits 0-9. Divide the maze floor into pentomino shaped regions (groups of five orthogonally connected cells.) Every cell belongs to exactly one pentomino region. Every thick maze wall sits between two separate regions. All five cells of a region must be filled with the same digit. Regions that touch along an edge (even through a wall) may not contain the same digit, and must not be the same shaped pentomino (rotations and reflections count as the same shape.) Most of the maze is obscured with fog. Correctly filling a pentomino will clear some fog somewhere. No guessing is necessary. A purple probe is a diamond shaped device built into a wall between two neighbouring pentomino regions. The digit on the attached circle indicates the total number of cells visited within those two neighbouring regions. If a blackcurrant sits between two digits, one is double the other. If a redcurrant sits between two digits, one is odd and the other is even. If a grape sits between two digits, they have a difference of at least 5. If a goldenberry sits between two digits, they are not consecutive (or the same.) A purple arrow sits between two different digits and points towards the smaller digit. Finkz may only pass through a purple arrow in the direction it's pointing. If a floor panel is illuminated with a blue square, it lies on Finkz' path and indicates that a spike in brain activity was detected in response to that digit. Two cells visited adjacently along the path may never sum to a prime number. (Note: 0 and 1 are not prime.) ▶ SIMON & MARK ATTEMPT BLUE PRINCE: THE SUDOKU ◀ This new epic (and epically long) video is now on Patreon (as well as our monthly sudoku hunt competition by Sandra & Nala).
