We’re told that it’s a black-and-white scenario - that she selfishly centered herself by throwing others under the bus, and that she ended up deservedly alone, hurt by all the fires she started. But consider the perspective of the narrator - and whether or not they are objective. Who has the right to say it’s only as black-and-white as that? What might it mean that someone learned as a child that this was the only way to receive connection - something we all need to survive? Is anything really gained by allowing someone who’s hurting to burn themself out? Candle Queen is a cautionary tale. The lesson is that we must be kind to one another, because even when we disagree with someone’s choices, if we label that person as deserving of suffering instead of seeking to understand what they need to thrive, we will all be choked by the flames of judgment.
