They say games are played on the field and not on paper. And that's a good thing because if this one were played on paper, it might get ugly. But you never know what's going to happen. Welcome everyone to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana, home of the Indiana Hoohoo Hooers, as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West, the San Diego State Aztecs, taking on the number one team in the land, the Indiana Hooers. For EA Sports College football, I'm Reese Davis, joined here in the booth as always by David Pollock and Jesse Palmer. Guys, let's tee this one up. And the Aztecs will kick it away to start us off. [cheering] Here he comes from inside his own five. And he's able to pick his way through the traffic nicely for a good return on that one before he's brought down. The Hooers offense will have the football first. Every team has impact players. What traits are you looking for when it comes to players you can make an impact, David? >> Well, obviously you want the main things, right? Speed, you know, physicality, like all power, all those things are really, really good, but you also need guys that will hold people accountable, guys that will lead. And it's nice to have those guys on your team. They're the leaders of the team and they're the best players. And part of the reason why they're leaders is because these guys galvanize their teammates, right? We've seen time and time again, these dudes make plays and it just sparks the sideline. It sparks the coaching staff. It sparks the fans. They're special players and they all have to play well today. >> You open a drive like that and the entire playbook opens up on first down from the 44 >> on the ground. It's BB. They'll knock him down for a loss of a couple. >> They're trying to run the ball on first down, guys, but just nothing doing up front. Their offensive line got blown up on that play. There was nowhere for that guy to go. >> And the Hooers with a long way to go after the loss on the last play [cheering] off the play fake. [cheering] He'll grab the throw to the sideline and step out of bounds after picking up a few. >> Yeah. And listen, I'm going to move this guy everywhere. He was in the slot this time, but I'm not going to let the defense understand where he's lining up so they can double team him. Put him in the slot. Put him out wide. Either way, find this guy early and often. >> A chance to sort of put the defense on its heels if you convert a third and long. This one from the 44. >> Throws to the wide out. Got his man. He's pushed out of bounds inside the 40, the 38. And these guys are on the move. And I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep. You got to wonder if the receiver [music] decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down. >> Power football with the run. Find some fresh air. He's brought down, but there's a flag on the field. Let's see which way that's going to go. We'll repeat the previous down, but this time the offense has 10 more yards it has to cover. >> Used the play fake now to throw. Finds his tight end. No chance to run, but still a good game. >> There's not a lot more beautiful in football than the play action and the open tight end because it freezes those linebackers. It freezes those safeties because they have to come up for a second and play the run and then the big tight ends, big targets on the back end can catch the football and make big plays. >> Looking for room. It's >> not much running there thanks to this senior defender. >> And man, the big fellas up front, they don't get a lot of credit. They don't get talked about a lot unless it's negative, but they're the big component, man. They've got to get some push to get some running lanes, get this running game going. They're the They're the ones that make it go. >> They've got to come up with a big play on this third and long. [cheering] >> Looking downfield, it's Mendoza. >> Makes the grab ripping off a good chunk inside the 25 and they're set up with a first down. >> That was a nice pickup running the drag route and finding that quiet soft spot in the zone. >> Yeah, drag routes not only work against man coverage. They work against zone two. If you can find the soft spot and the quarterback gets it to him early, he can turn up field. And you saw that right there. >> He'll do it himself. >> Short gain on the play before he slides. >> They go with the option. Quarterback keeps it himself. And look, we've seen this guy on tape, guys, break these tackles and take it the distance. This offense should keep dialing up these option plays. Don't let that short game by the QB prevent you from running this scheme in your playbook. Plenty of distance between them and the sticks here on second down. They'll give it to the back. Made a defender miss and he's loose and he'll take it to the house. Touchdown Hooers. [cheering] >> Well, you know this offensive coordinator scripts his opening 10 15 plays and he didn't even need that. They went nine plays and scored a touchdown. Everything working perfectly. They look like a welloiled machine early in this game offensive. getting ready for the extra point after the first score of the game. >> And the extra point makes it 7 nothing. So an 82 yd drive there and it was capped with an explosive 22 yd run. >> They are set to kick it off. You think this crowd's going to get loud when their defense comes on the field. >> On the run from inside his own five. Nice job by the kickoff team. Everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16. So, the San Diego State Aztec offense will get the ball for the first time. [music] >> [cheering] >> They'll crank up this drive with a pass and he just flat dropped it. I think he wanted to run before he secured it. >> And in this weather, man, you start to see more of this. You try to throw the ball harder to penetrate it through the weather and and get it to your target, but just catching a football that's a little bit slippery sometimes, you'll see some of those drops and it's just part of the game. >> Working well behind the sticks on second down. [cheering] They'll throw again after the incompletion. Got a man. It's Napia. He makes it up to the 20 yd line before going out of bounds. >> Well, your opponent scored on their opening drive, so obviously no need to panic. But I know having been in this situation as a quarterback. You want to answer right away. So, really good to see him making some nice throws here on their opening drive. He's going to try and see if he can get this thing tied up. [cheering] >> On third and long, try to convert through the air. makes the play. It's intercepted. Speeding down the right side and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception. Looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out. Indiana sends the offense onto the field. Already a solid start to this one. Now back to work with this seven nothing lead. [cheering] Caught over the middle. It's >> and he brought one tackle on the way to a solid pickup there. >> And this offense, I think, will do a good job in this game divvying up the football and distributing it to different guys in the passing game. It won't just be receivers. It's not going to be tight ends. This running back, he's a weapon, too, after he catches it. You saw it right there. >> The Hooers can play this second down a lot of ways with just a few yards to go. Oh, it's a reverse. [cheering] >> Defense just going after him. They stop him for a loss of six. >> Everybody loves those trick plays, man. Those misdirections. But the problem is when you stay home and you play the play really discipline and sound like this defense does, you knock it dead. And a lot of times for a loss and put the offense in a bind. >> Quite a bit of work to do on third down from the 23. And this D would love to force a field goal try. caught behind the line. It's Hembi. They make the stop about four yd short of the first down. >> And that's why as a defense, you want to set up third and long situations. You just want to be able to keep the football in front of you. It's okay for that quarterback to hit the running back on that pass. Now you have all those bodies flying to the football and they're able to make a tackle. >> On fourth down, they'll throw for it. A shot toward the end zone and he's got it. Touchdown Indiana. And it's so underrated the the relationship between a QB and a wide receiver, the timing, the ability to know where he's going to be and be accurate with the football. That's what leads to nice touchdowns, Jesse. Well, and the chemistry between these two guys has to be great when you're throwing it because coverage is going to be tight. The throw might not be perfect, but this is something these two guys have been repping in practice over and over and over, and it's paying dividends now on game on to attempt the try. [cheering] >> And the extra point pushes the lead to 14. Quick work on that scoring drive. Just four plays and they close the deal with a 20 yd pass for six. Kickoff unit on the field and this defense will be called on to protect this lead. and he takes this from inside the five. >> He was hoping for something a little more dynamic, but they get him on the ground at the 20. Guys, let's see what adjustments this San Diego State offense has made this time. >> They haven't exactly burst out of the starting box and they need to get something together with this possession. >> Well, a nice job by the defense. They're playing with a big lead. They know the offense has to throw it and they are inviting throws over the middle of the field knowing they can break on these passes and maybe pick one off. Offense lucky that wasn't a turnover >> after that last incompletion. Here's second and 10 from their own 20. Unloads to the wide out. Makes the grab. It's busted out to the 35 yd line and a little extra breathing room with that 15 yd pickup. Ball is at the 35. It's first and 10. [cheering] Used the play fake now to throw >> under fire. It's just so nice to have a QB under center nowadays in football. You can trust these guys. You put so much on their plate and you tell them go get positive yards when it's there. And a lot of these guys are such great athletes. They do it with ease. >> Offense gets set for second down. [cheering] >> Quick pass on the fly motion. >> Not much running room there thanks to this senior defender. >> Well, and on these little push passes, timing is so important. You're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head of steam. When he gets the ball, he's hitting the outside. and David, it puts the defense in such a difficult spot. >> You immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion. So, everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over. That's why offenses love to run. It just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of a spot. >> They were all over him. Nowhere to go as that third down play turned into a disaster. The Aztecs decide to putt it away. They'll have to putt for the first time this afternoon. [cheering] Fields the punt and tries to find an opening and he's going to get it up to about the 29 yd line before he's brought down. Indiana has the ball back and the Hooser offense comes out ready to go to the air. It's Mendoza. He put two touchdowns on the board in the early going and now right back to work and the explosiveness of Big Gainer gets it to the 49 yd line. >> First down for this offense. They'll try the right side. [cheering] >> Running the green. Pass the sticks and still on his feet. Really putting together a threat. Now they get the first hits at the 37. To call what Indiana did last year a renaissance. It's an insult to all renaissances everywhere. It was complete resurrection. The losing program. They got 11 wins and went to the playoffs. >> Coach Signetti has just galvanized this entire program. And all of a sudden, after only one year, the expectations are different. Could it ever happen, David? Could this team get back to the playoff again? >> It was one of the biggest stories in college football. Everybody kept talking about, does Indiana deserve to be there? And now another year further down the road, going to the transfer portal again, not having the new coach with the connection to JMU. This this Indiana team can still be fun to watch and still prove a lot of people. >> And the Hooers can really attack on this second and short. From the gun, the ground game. Oh, he's got some space. >> Finally Corral, but not before. He picks up the first down. The Hooers after ripping off that huge run. Let's see if they can do it again. [screaming] They'll try to get it in with the run. [cheering] Going for THE GOAL LINE. TOUCHDOWN HOOERS. And they add six more to the board with that trip to the house. They are absolutely boat racing this team right now. We're not even at the second quarter yet. And this offense has been up and down the field. They've taken a huge lead early. Everything [music] they're dialing up, David, is working. >> Yeah. So, I'm going to flip this to the other side. I'm going to need my offense to score some points and in a hurry. Like, they got to figure it out. But, they got to put a drive together, keep us off the field, score some points, and let us find some answers because right now defensively, we have none. >> [cheering] >> And he did get that extra point through. No problem with the frozen tundra beneath him. A very efficient fiveplay scoring drive. And what a way to finish it with a 9 yd touchdown run. Kickoff unit back to work. And they have been busy as they built this sizable lead. Prime inside the 10. Here he comes. He's got great speed. This guy is so dangerous. The excellent vision to find the lane and get it out and set up the offense with good field position. >> He'll start this drive going to the air. Here comes the Heat. >> And the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down. >> Not many receivers like to get hit. They just don't. Okay, they're primadonas. That's what they are. That's who they are. Nice job by the defender. You could tell he was catching the football. He was going to put a hit on him to make sure he had to think about something later. And you could see the ball pop out and fall to the ground. [cheering] >> Right back to the air on second and 10. Missed his receiver there. It's incomplete. your feet. It's third down. Now facing a third and long from the gun. Wants to pass [cheering] and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free. And fourth down is coming up. That's a really good break on the football. He He sees the ball come out and he hits him right as he's catching it. Nice job of dislodging the football from the receiver. That's a good play by the defensive back >> and the Aztecs will bring the punt team onto the field. This will be the second time they've had to kick it away. Fair catch is collected at the 24 and that's where they'll start this drive. Indiana sends the offense onto the field. They could not have drawn up a better start than this. Already up 21 nothing. >> Fired just a little too long as the junior frustrated he missed that connection. >> Yeah, just not able to connect that time with his target on the inb breaking route. Got to have a little bit better rhythm. You know these windows are going to be small over the middle of the field and that's why you try to put some extra mustard on it. But I think that time that's what forced the incomplete. >> After the incompletion, it's second and 10 from their own 25. wants to throw. It's Mendoza. >> Just too much mustard on that one. Can't miss the target that badly. >> I know that one falls incomplete, but I love the idea of finding ways to get this running back the ball, right? You can hand it off to him. He's got really good hands. Already has a few catches in this game. I think you keep trying to leak him out of the back field and let him take advantage of this defense throwing the ball >> on third and long. trying to have a big completion here. Got out of trouble, got rid of it. That's caught. It's Cooper and he's got enough for the first down. It'll be at the 35. >> Well, we know this guy is special and because of that, his quarterback is looking to him on critical down and distances there on that third down. There was no question. It wouldn't have mattered if he was single covered, double covered, man zone. That's where he was going with it. And the big time playmaker outside picks up the first. >> Brought down at the 46, but he got 10 on the play. >> When you're on offense, you see so much of this nowadays. You see misdirection. You see somebody flying across the formation. Why? To get the eyeballs of those linebackers, to get them to move out of a gap, one space works to perfection here. That's why they break off the big gain on offense. leaves it with the running backs into the open. Couldn't ask for much more there. A first down and they're down to the 42. >> Every offense wants to be able to run the ball and be physical, especially on first down. And you want to create second and short, third and short, or just get first downs like that run right there. >> And the Hooers will snap it on first and 10. >> [cheering] >> wants to go up top on first down >> and this will be incomplete. A big hit there forces second down. >> I know one of the things this defense really prides themsself on is being physical and early in this game. Putting a big hit on a guy that's already had a couple catches in this game. That's a good omen for the defense. >> Plenty of work to do here on second and long [cheering] >> looking to throw. It's Mendoza. with the catch. It's Henby. >> And a good job of coverage by that defense. Just a short pick up. >> You know, sometimes even a short game like that can be used to set up something bigger later on. >> No doubt, Ree, they can pump that, take a shot down the field. And don't worry, they're going to go back to that same play cuz they know this guy with the ball in his hands is dangerous. He makes one guy miss, he can take it to the house. We reach the end of the period. It's Indiana on top. They wanted to strike first and strike hard and they've been able to do that here in the first quarter. As we take a look at the stats, this could be a pivotal moment in this game as we open the second period and they try to find a way to answer. This offense had a little extra time to think about it. Let's see what they have on third down. He'll keep it himself. [cheering] He's not quite going to make it to the sticks. It'll be fourth down from the 36. >> And man, they they sneaked the option in there on third and long. And I don't know, was that was that a misread? Like, do you get the ball to your tail back? Like, it was pretty well defended. They had the quarterback swallowed up. He got some yards, but now you're forced into a fourth down. And this might be a passing situation. >> Kick is in the air. Boy, they had a chance to track that thing down, but it bounces into the end zone for a touchback. The Aztecs offense ready to go back to work. They've fallen into this big hole and they are pretty desperate for answers right now. Looking down the middle and that one falls incomplete. They tried to go over the top on first down. Second down coming up. >> It just looks to me like the offense is starting to get a little bit impatient, right guys? They haven't scored in this game yet. And all of a sudden now they're taking shots down the field and they're trying to make it happen. But the defense, they have been lights out. They force another incompletion. >> Gives it on the option. Defense there to stop him after a gain of one to the 22. >> And that run really didn't go anywhere. And a lot of times we don't focus on it enough. how important those five guys are up front to get on those defensive linemen to [music] try to move them out of the way to get a run game going. It squarely falls on the shoulder of those five offensive line. >> It'll be third and long [cheering] from the gun wants to pass. Fires to the wide out and that one's incomplete. Worth taking a shot there but couldn't hook up. You can just start to sense the frustration building for this offense after that incompletion right now setting up fourth down. They haven't yet scored a touchdown. They just can't find a rhythm in this game. Obviously, the defense the big reason for that. But if this offense wants a chance to win, they have got to start stringing some completions together and get this quarterback in a better rhythm. >> Indiana has the ball back and the Hooser offense comes out ready to go. They'll have another opportunity to extend this lead after punting last time, David. >> And it's important to put that puck behind you. It's It's over. Let it go. Get back to what you were doing that built this lead. >> Yeah. And defense, obviously, they won a few downs uh that last drive. So, you got to put them on their heels here. Maybe mix up a few personnel groupings and try to show them some pictures they haven't seen yet. >> Didn't get much on first down. It's second and nine. >> Makes the grab. It's Cooper. >> Hey, make the stop and he'll have enough yardage for a first down. >> Here's this offense with a fresh set of downs. >> He'll pull it on the re. >> Got to protect the merchandise. Gets down. without taking a hit. >> Well, not much the defense could do there. The defensive end crashed down thinking the running back had it, but nice job with the ball handling there by the QB. >> Just trying to avoid negative plays. Continue to put stress on the defense. That's what he does there. >> And that's a play this guy can run in his sleep, too. They rep this over and over and over. It's like clockwork for this guy. >> From the gun, running back gets to give. Picks up the first down. Really good serves for this offense. as they move the chains and he's got it at 34. >> Man, who says you can't run up the middle anymore, right? Everybody thinks I got to make big plays. I got to go way out to the left, way out to the right, way out in space. Nope. Right down the middle. Nice blocking. How about the running back? You could tell the speed, the wheels. Does a great job getting down the field, making a huge rushing play. >> Leaves it with the back >> and a 9 yd gain on first down. Leaves him with second and short. You want to make play calling easy for an offensive coordinator, run the ball like that every play. I mean, when you can run that on first down and set up a short yardage on second down, it makes play calling easy. Every single call on that sheet is available here on second down. >> Out of the gun, the inside handoff looking for a crease. He's stopped after a oneyd pick up at the 25. And that was a nice second down run and setting up third and inches. And now it's physical time, right? Like they know you might run the football. You know you probably want to run the football. How can you be more physical? Sometimes bring some extra bodies, some extra tight ends in. Go to that play that you know is your short yardage play. >> Tries to slither forward on the sneak. He'll come through on third down. He's got enough and they'll mark it at the 23. >> And David on third and inches right there. That's often a decision the quarterback predetermines. Who's my best guard? That's the guy I'm going to try to get behind. >> And I know that defensively, too. But I'm just trying to dive and create a pile, but it's so hard to stop that play. That's why you see it ran so successfully. >> They go to the ground, turning it on. They'll finally get him stopped at the ONEYD LINE. WHAT A run there. >> The Hooers line it up with a first and goal. >> [cheering] >> They'll try to get it in with the run. >> Into the end zone he goes. Touchdown [cheering] Indiana. And this crowd was already jacked up. They were already excited. They were already making a difference in this football game. And the offense continues to pile on and give them something to cheer about. 27 nothing here in the first half. This has been all home team. Now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic. [cheering] >> And the extra point makes it 28 to nothing. They put together a 65 yd drive for the score. >> And they capped it off with a one-yd punch. kickoff unit getting some extra work as this lead has really grown. [cheering] >> On the move from inside is five. >> Just never had a chance to shake loose and he'll be brought down at the 24. San Diego State takes over as the offense is ready to go to work. >> Got a man. It's busted. And just a short safe pass play. They pick up a few. >> I like the slot receiver because he gives his quarterback a good option working the middle of the field. He's a nice weapon in this offense. >> Four wide outs yet. Two by two on second and five. >> Back to pass. Fires to the right. Got him downfield. Great pick up as they'll keep this drive moving and they've got it at the 45. >> First down here for the offense. >> Looking to throw on first down. Throws for the tight end. And the defense forced that incompletion with the deflection. And I don't know if the quarterback got confused on first down. He might have thought the defense was going to be in man coverage that time, but they were in zone. They fooled him and just didn't seem like he had his eyes in the right place. Was forcing that ball to his intended target. The window way too small. The guy was not open. So that didn't have that chance to be complete. >> They'll send the back in motion. >> Oh, maybe a double pass. [cheering] >> A little too much on that one. just out of his reach. >> Really good defense. You know, you're trying to stay as close as you can to all these targets and most importantly those open field tackles and getting them on the ground as soon as they catch it. That's a major deal for defenses and that was a good example there. >> Now trying to keep this drive alive on third and long from the 45 >> on target to the left. Third down. Conversions are huge and they've got one and they're at the 35. >> When I see the defense in man coverage, I'm trying to get my fast guy versus their worst corner. Trying to get a great match up on the outside, take advantage of it to make big plays. >> This offense has been sluggish to say the least, but finally they're on the move on first and 10. [cheering] >> They weren't able to get that one off. It'll be a delay of game. The >> quarterback just lost track of the play clock. Didn't get the snap off quickly enough. >> Off the play fake on first down. Wants to throw. Unloads to the wide out. Got his man on the right. He's brought down, but there's a flag on the field. Let's see what the call is. >> First left. late hit on the quarterback gives this offense a free first down and some yardage. >> Wants to throw it. >> He's got it on the move. They stop him just short of the first down, but it will be second and inches coming up. It'll be second down. And remember, they can pick up a first without scoring. >> They're looking to throw on second and short. Finds his big tight end. They make the stop, but there is a flag on the field. We'll see what that's all about. Late hit moves the ball up 15 yds and the offense will take that gift set up right on the doorstep. First and goal with the one. >> They'll try to run it in AND HE TAKES IT IN FOR THE SCORE. TOUCHDOWN SAN DIEGO STATE. >> Follow the blockers. The offensive line will take you to the Hallelujah land. And I tell you what, most [music] of the time, Ree, it requires a little bit of skill to find that hole and, you know, slither through a little crack. That was not a crack. That was wide open. Didn't take a lot of vision cuz the blocking was outstanding. >> Lining up for the PAT. is on for the extra point. [cheering] >> The extra point is good, but they're still down 28-7. They marched the ball 51 yds for the score and they capped it off with a one-yd punch. >> They're coming out to tee it up for the kickoff. And that last score was a real buzz kill for this crowd. He'll start the return inside his five. He was hoping for something a little more dynamic, but they get him on the ground at the 20. Indiana sends the offense onto the field. If you like oldfashioned grinded up run over football, that last touchdown drive was for you, Jesse. >> That was impressive, man. Great blocking up front and tough physical running by these ball carriers. >> And now you wonder how the defense responds. Like, are they going to get way more aggressive to try to stop the run? I gotta do something to break the rhythm of that running game. >> Lining up from the 34 on first down. >> Trying to make that rush think on the draw play here. Man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out. After the three yd pickup, they come to the line. Second and seven. >> To the air. It's Mendoza. Quick strike complete. And they get to him and knock him down to prevent a bigger game. >> Love the location of the throw on that slant pass. Put it out in front of the receiver. put it on his face mask so he can catch it and try to advance. >> And the Hooers are facing third and inches. >> He'll go to the sneak. [cheering] >> Man, let's not make football hard. Quarterback sneak has worked and it continues to work. Keep using it till they stop it on those short yardage plays. The Hooers are moving quickly down the field. >> Out of the gun. The running back has it. >> Able to scrge three yds out of that one somehow. It's second and seven. >> And the defense doing a great job committing to the run. When you commit to the run like this, obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game, but you got to stop the run first. >> Got three on first down. It's second and seven. >> Looking for a gap. It's got the first down and more. Good pick up there. They'll move the change and they're set up at the 41. You got to be impressed by what you've seen by this offense so far in this game in the first half. They've got a nice lead and they've been able to do it with explosive plays, but they've also been able to do it with efficiency and getting first downs and staying on the field. You saw another great example right there running the football. Anything they want to do right now is working. >> And the Hooers will snap it on first and 10. >> [cheering] >> They're trying to slow that rush down with the draw. >> He works his way inside the 30 down to the 29 and picks up a first down. >> Want to talk about a monster performance. This guy now has 150 yards rushing. The defense has had no answer for this guy and he's shown you why he is such a weapon in this offense. speed, the ability to catch the ball, the vision, the quickness. He's got all the tools in the tool box. >> Not much running room there thanks to this senior defender. >> Well, the QB decided to keep it on that one. And listen, if you had his athleticism, you'd want to keep it, too. Almost every time they run these types of option plays, but he's just going to have to do a good job of understanding when to hand it off, when to pitch it, and try to keep this defense on their heels and read his keys. He's got a lot of talent. Just got to make sure he's making the right decisions moving forward. >> They stop him almost immediately. Short gain there and still a little ground cover to pick up the first. >> How nice is it in this offense to have your best receiver playing in the slot? You're matching him up against linebackers, against safeties or nickel corners. Nickel corners are often times the defense's third best cornerback. This guy is virtually uncoverable. >> And he was able to shed a tackle and pick up the first down before they finally get him on the ground. Looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out. The Hooers kept his drive moving on the ground. Now back to work. >> Rides to back on the option to give. Got enough space. Touchdown Hooers. How about this back staying on track and getting it in on the option. >> And the defense really needed to stop there. They needed to create some momentum, get the ball back to the offense before the half, but the offense does their job and they continue to pile on, continue to create momentum. There's going to have to be some questions answered at half with this squad because it's been a struggle in the first half. The offense quickly calls timeout to stop the clock. I think that was an example of the offensive coordinator trying to help out his quarterback. He's trying to keep these third downs manageable. You know, you throw the ball on second down and it's incomplete. Now, you've set up third and long and now you're set up to fail. >> And they can't make the connection on third down. >> I want to give a shout out to the defense there on third down. Doing a really nice job disguising their coverage because it looked like they confused the quarterback on third down. really nice job getting back into that zone and making sure that ball falls incomplete. >> And on fourth down, they'll try to put three on the board. The holder will kneel down at the 29, making it a 39 yd attempt. >> Good. Right down the boulevard. >> And you want a touchdown and you want to be aggressive, but man, right down the middle, that obviously gives me some confidence down the road that I can trust this guy. So they get the field goal now about to kick it away and you get a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things. Here he comes from inside his own five. Nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22. >> So let's see how they play it in this final 30 seconds of the first half. And the undisputed star of the half has been that lock down corner. The coaches told us how good he was. But I almost think they undersold how impactful he would be. Ultra physical with zero hesitation. And with hands like that, I wonder if they don't think about using him in the passing game at some point. And you thought maybe in this second half this offense could just find a rhythm, find something to take advantage of this defense, but the defense has really had their number. He'll make the fair catch signal and secure the catch. Indiana has the ball back and the Hooser offense comes out ready to go. Stopped behind the line of scrimmage and that is a rare sight for this defense today against this guy. >> Well, the defense was trailing going in at halftime and I think they made some adjustments against the run. They want to slow this guy down. That's a really nice start to the second half if you're on defense. >> The Hooers now with a long way to go to pick up the first down. >> Back to throw. It's Mendoza. fires to the big fella. >> They'll get him down, but not before he crosses the 50. He's down to the 49. >> A lot of smiles right now on this offense. They've got a big lead and they're just having fun out there. They're still throwing the football. These receivers are still getting open. Pass protection is still great. This quarterback's thinking to himself, "Man, I'm going to be patting my stats here in the second half of this game because everything we're dialing up is working." >> Leaves it with the back. Sweet putt there. They pick up half of it. It'll be second and five. >> All right. Great little run there. Listen, it wasn't phenomenal. He didn't get a first down, but what does it do now? It makes second down easier. The play caller looking at his sheet going, "All right, I can throw it. I can run it." Still in a great position. Way to way to stay ahead of the chains. >> Halfway there on first down. It's second and five. >> Wide receiver going in motion using his feet. creates a little space. Nice run there to keep things moving before they force him out of bounds. >> This shouldn't be a surprise to anybody. If you've got the lead [music] in the third quarter and you want to keep it, you got to bleed the clock. Best way to do that, run the football. And you're now seeing this offense, call these run plays backto back. They are trying to be physical and they're trying to stay on the field. [cheering] >> They run the reverse. They see the reverse and I love the speed, the close, and the tackle. They get a tackle for a loss on that gadget type play. Gets it out to the 22 before going out of bounds and they are suddenly out of trouble. How nice is it in an offense when you can generate explosive plays by running the football? You got to force feed this guy, man. He is an absolute game changer. And the Aztecs after exploding for that huge run. Back to work. Out of the shotgun, they go to the ground. That's some old school hardnos tough running as he powers his way to the 30. It's got to feel good as an offense knowing that early in the drive you can turn around, hand it off, get a push up front, and go get positive yardage. >> The Aztecs with myriad options after that big pickup on first down. It'll be interesting to watch this offense really down the stretch because they can't really have that balance especially when they're going backwards. Like they're down, they've got to put up some points, got to get some stops. I think this offense has to be aggressive and I think it's going to have to be through the air. >> Put themselves in a bit of a bind with that last win is second and 14. Trying to impose their will on the ground as he stopped after a five yd pick up to the 33. Man, it's easy to call plays when you're getting five or six yards a pop on the ground. Like, why would I get complicated? Why would I get complex like up front right now? One of the areas they really focused on with this receiver in the offseason was we need you to make more plays for us in the end zone. And I think a lot of that has to do with trusting your guy, knowing where he's going to be, knowing when he's going to sit down when he's not. So being on the same page, and then having a guy that can go get it. Just when the ball is near him, he's going to make the play just like he did right there for six points. lining up to add another. He had that thing and just lost his concentration. >> Man, this is an unbelievable start for this defender in this game, guy. That's already his second PD in this game. Playing with his eyes, he's breaking on the ball. You just can't start a game any better. The Aztecs come to the line on third down trying to keep this drive alive. If you're on offense, fourth quarter, you've got a huge lead. Obviously, you're going to run the football, but just be aware of the clock. You don't want to snap it too quickly. You're probably just doing safe runs inside the tackles like you saw right there. You just got to execute. Be a little bit conservative. Or you just say, I'm just going to keep doing me. And what I do with this offense is throw the football all over the yard and I'm going to try to win me a big trophy at the end of the year. >> Was looking for more running room but found nothing but more tacklers. He's down at the 24. Guys, we're about to get another look at this San Diego State offense. Didn't get anything done. Three and out on their last series. They'll try to find a rhythm here. And it's incomplete. If you're going to take a hit like that, you might as well hang on to the ball. >> And it's going to be hard for this offense. They've struggled to pass the football down the field to make these explosive plays and now huge deficit. Got to make them. You got to find a way to push the ball down the field to create some explosive plays if you want a chance to get back in this football game. >> He'll try it again on second and 10. It's really been that kind of story. This defense has made this guy earn it every single play. Really small windows to throw into. One touchdown pass. That's a little bit surprising. You thought maybe they'd have more in this game. [cheering] >> Third and long and he'll try to throw for it. >> And the heat will get home and the quarterback goes down at the 17. >> Pretty nice as a defense, right? You can go nickel, put five DBs on the field and not have to blitz anyone. Trusting your front four to get the job done on third down. And they do it right there. Getting the sack. >> The Aztecs will line up to punt it away. Doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt. He'll fair catch this one in the snow. Got to make sure that you don't let that thing squirt through. Indiana has the ball back and the Hooser offense comes out ready to go. He'll keep it himself. And the defense holds firm. No pickup at all on that play. >> I don't think the quarterback made the right read on that play. I know they're asking a lot of this QB. He's got a lot to focus on with the pass game and all the different types of runs they have in their playbook. But on that play there, that pre- snap look told me to hand it off. >> Tight end in motion. See how the D reacts. >> An unforced error there. They don't get the snap off in time. Delay of game. >> The delay of game pushes the offense back. Line getting set on second down. >> They'll ride the running back and leave it with him. Continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on midfield. It's down at the 48. And I know you can play these late game situations differently, but I love when you just stay physical. You run the football. You preserve the lead. You got great field position. You're in a great position to salt this clock away and get a W. >> They'll run play action. >> Quarterback feeling that pressure and he's knocked down at the 42. This defense, they are tenacious and they've got guys up front that are athletic and that are so strong and then can collapse the pocket. You saw it right there in that play action attempt. >> The Hooers send out the punt unit. They've been busy out there to punt for the fifth time today. [cheering] He'll get away another punt. He's been really active today and no doubt he's going to earn his varsity ladder. He'll get it to about the 25 before they put a stop to the return. Guys, let's see what adjustments this San Diego State offense has made this time. They didn't get much done the last time they had it. Had to punt it away from deep in their own territory, hoping this drive will be more productive. He's stopped just a chain link or two away from the first down and sets them up beautifully here. And maybe the big fella can jumpst start this offense a little bit. They got to get some points and he's that big physical guy breaking some tackles, making some plays here in the fourth quarter. They're going to need it. >> And the Aztecs have a lot of options on second and [cheering] >> he didn't get the pitch off and he paid the price. >> Phenomenal job by the defense that time shutting down the option play. They knew they were going to see this in this game and all week long in practice they really focused on this assignment football making sure the dive, the quarterback, the pitch all taken away. Nowhere to go with the football that time offensively. The defense coming up with a huge negative play. >> Oh, he dropped the football. He had it right in the middle of the field and just ran before he finished the catch. It'll be fourth down. >> And it's going to be difficult for this offense, man. Just where are they going to find the plays? As you can tell, the defense sitting back. They're playing nickel. They're playing dime. So, you need some receivers to step up, make some yards after the catch. Some contested plays. This offense has got to do something and they got to do it quick. >> On fourth down, looking for the completion. Can't make the connection. And the defense gets a fourth down stop. Couldn't ask for better starting field position for this offense. They'll go with a direct snap >> and a good solid pick up there before the defense knocks him down. >> Well, no mystery on that play call, right? You've got the lead late in the game. You've gotten the ball back on the other side of the 50 on your opponent's side. And so, you're just going to run it. And it's fine if they know that. You just want to stay on the field and bleed this clock. And you got to start thinking about where are your best run at runs. Which side of this offensive line is the strongest? Which guys defensively do you want to attack? So you can take as much time off the clock as possible. >> Man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out. >> Finally, some signs of life from this offense which has done nothing in the second half. It's first and 10. Give to the back fighting off the defender. He rolls all the way down to the five yd line before they finally get stopped. >> It was so important this offense was able to find a way to get in the rhythm and the running game is now helping that. Two straight punts on their previous two drives. This drive though, they're having a little bit more success. Big reason why is this running back. He's been able to find some creases to run through and it's really helping out this offense. >> He'll pull it on the re. He's brought down, but there's a flag on [cheering] the field. Let's see which way that's going to go. >> That penalty moves the ball back 10 yardds. We'll replay the down. >> And the Hooers trying to pay off the threat on first and goal. >> [cheering] >> from the shotgun. The hand off to the back. >> Got some room headed to the goal line and they're able to get him down, but not before he gets to the two. >> You know, you better form tackle better on defense. You had a chance to make a big play, miss the running back, and as a result, he's getting positive yards. Defense has to do a better job of finishing. >> They've moved it forward to the two. And the puddling has started. lining up to tack one more onto that lead. >> And he puts through the extra point. a very efficient fiveplay scoring drive and finished the deal with the short touchdown run from the two. >> Kickoff unit has been busy as they have built a big lead and they're trying to hold on to it. On the run from inside his own five, he was looking for some running room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18. The Aztec's offense ready to go back to work. We'll see if that failed fourth down in their own end last time, David, sort of curbs some of the aggressiveness. >> Well, you hear about it all the time in football. Go for it. Be aggressive. The problem is when you get stopped, sometimes it puts you in a hole. And Jesse, now the offense has to come out and respond. >> They were real disappointed not getting that first down. You could see it on the sideline. So, let's just see if that's kind of galvanized them a little bit here to go make a statement and get some points. All day long, this defense has been able to pin their ears back and get after this guy. And because of that, he's never gotten into a rhythm throwing the football. It's Napier and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short game. >> It's always interesting how people handle late game. Like you know this game is over. There's not a lot to gain from it, but some people try to throw the ball deep and continue to make plays. They throw it short. The clock's running out and there's not a lot to talk about that's going to be positive for this offense. on third and long. He's going to have to throw for it. >> CAUGHT near the sideline. It's Chavez all the way out to the 43 yd line before he's pushed out of bounds. And this offense is on the move. >> The Aztecs look to keep this drive humming. They just keep firing. Fires to the right. That's caught. It's busted. He puts him in business across the 50 into the 46 yd line. It'll be first down. He unleashed that one. Some serious spin rate. Some revolutions on that one. [laughter] Want to talk about velocity? How about the arm talent this kid has? I love watching him throw these curl routes. He's in rhythm. He takes his steps and man when he decides to pull the trigger. Watch out. >> Going for it all. >> Oh, he had it. The deep ball was there and it just trickled through his fingers. >> It's just been frustrating to watch the inconsistency of this guy at QB. Man, you you've got to be able to to stay in rhythm in an offense and stay ahead of schedule. And he's had a moment and he threw a touchdown pass, but more consistency, more finding the open guys, delivering it to them, and keeping this offense on schedule. HE'LL BE FORCED OUT OF BOUNDS. BIG PICK UP ON THE PLAY AND THEY'LL MARK HIM DOWN AT the 28. >> And that's why QBs love their tight ends so much, right? Especially when they're athletic because they make short throws turn into long gains because of his ability after the catch. It's so unique and special. He is dominant in this offense. >> And the Aztecs have it with a first and 10. >> Grabbed in the back field. It's Brown. He's brought down, but there's a flag on the field. Let's see what the call is. >> First, roughing the pass. >> So, the offense gets an automatic first down after the roughing the passer penalty. They want to throw it. LET IT FLY. KNOCKED AWAY. INCOMPLETE. And quarters get tied in the red zone. Great awareness by that defender that time, seeing the ball thrown, getting his big paw, knocking it down, and now you set up second down. >> Defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play. Now a second and long coming. >> Off play action. >> Let it go to the end zone and it's incomplete as he was trying to finish the drive with a score >> at this point in the game. In the fourth quarter, it is going to be tough for this offense to get some completions here because now trailing by this much, the defense is expecting pass and they're putting a whole bunch of extra DBs on the field to help them out in coverage. Now third and goal and tough yardage to cover here. [cheering] >> Sends it back in motion. >> They're going to throw it on third and goal. and he was trying to cash in in the end zone in this red zone threat, but it's incomplete. >> Offense just not able to get it clicking down here in the red zone. That's three straight incompletions trying to fit the football into tight windows, but the timing not there. A lot of times they close so fast, man. Be decisive. Stick your foot in the ground. [cheering] >> They'll run it from the gun and he has a solid gain before the defense bottles him up. And those plays from a defensive perspective, man, they're just super annoying because now I'm in the worst spot ever. Third and manageable. Like I I I don't know if you're passing, don't know if you're running. So nice job by this offense keeping this defense off balance and creating a third down opportunity that's in their favor. >> And the Hooers are at the line looking to convert on third and short. >> [cheering] >> quarterback on the keeper >> that just never had a chance as they controlled the middle of the field and stopped him in the back field on third down. >> That's got to hurt if you're the offense cuz you're thinking with this quarterback and his size and his athleticism, that's going to be an easy first down pickup on the option play. But how about the physicality up front by this defense stuffing him at the line of scrimmage? And nobody able to field that punt as it rolls out of bounds. A lot of work to do as this drive will start from the 16 yd line. >> From the gut, give on the inside. They'll rip off eight on that play. But a good pick up on that one. >> And listen, the defense playing really conservative, right? You got the lead, but here's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to get sacks. I got to get to the quarterback. Like, I got to make sure I'm getting him, knocking him off the spot, patting my stats, by the way. Got a lot of sacks late in games when we had a big lead. But that's okay. That's what you're supposed to do. Keep competing, defense. They knock him down, but he's got enough to get it across the line and pick up the first down >> on second down. Defensively, I'm always like, "Hey, let's get to third down." Really good job by the offense. Was like, "Nah, we're going to stick this run right down your throat. Get the first down on second down. We don't need third downs." >> And the Aztecs come to the line with a fresh set of downs. >> To the air on first down. >> Incomplete. He threw that one up for grabs and into traffic and fortunate to get it back. >> And this defense has put a game together. Like it is hard to put all the facets of defense together. Run defense, pass defense. They've been so good, man. Dialed in. You could tell they were ready. They were fast. They were physical. They dominated this football game today. >> Second and 10. He'll throw again >> and wings it incomplete. This defense has just been all over this guy all game long under pressure. They're finding a way to get to him and affect his rhythm. Of course, they have an interception in this game. That's why they've got a big lead here in the fourth quarter. And this is always the time in the game where coaches are absolutely watching like which one of my guys mail it in and quit. And if you're a quarterback, man, you've been been sacked a few times, you've turned the football over, like continue to play. Find some ways to maybe get a few first downs and make something positive happen. >> On third and goal, they'll try to throw it in. It's incomplete. He was shooting for the end zone right there. >> And this offense put together a pretty good drive, man. But man, did they stall out. Three straight incompletions trying to find something that would work. But this defense, they stood up after giving up some yards and really finish this drive well. >> He wants to throw it.
