With so many coming to the Orthodox Church today, both as inquirers and catechumens, it is more important than ever that we understand and put into practice the Orthodox way of purification and initiation. The priest is the "mystagogue", the initiator of the disciple into the Mystery of the Church. He is the spiritual "coach" who takes his spiritual athlete step by step through the process of purification in preparation for the big day of baptism-chrismation-communion. The inquirer becomes a catechumen through the service of the making of a catechumen and begins to live the life of the Church in every way except for participation in the Mysteries of the Church: prayer, fasting, almsgiving, spiritual struggles to see oneself, to repent, to confess and to in general be in a place able to receive the Grace of God imparted in the Mysteries.
