Later retitled Horrors of the Red Planet and Alien Massacre for home video, it follows four astronauts who crash-land on Mars in the distant future of 1975. Stranded with dwindling oxygen, they paddle inflatable rafts down Martian canals, survive attacks from creatures that appear to be made from plumbing supplies, wander through caves for what feels like a lifetime, and eventually follow a golden road to a crumbling alien city where the projected, disembodied head of John Carradine delivers an endless monologue about impaling time upon an axis. Directed by David L. Hewitt on a reported budget of $33,000 (allegedly funded by a group of vending machine operators), it's a bizarre, low-budget retelling of The Wizard of Oz set on the Red Planet, complete with a character named Dorothy, a golden road, and an ending that implies it was all a dream.
