Bird art by Cass: https://www.casswomack.com I love you, Mango 💕 In my fourth installment in the "Wacky War Tactics" series, we're putting a heavy emphasis on World War 2. It should be no surprise that the pinnacle of human warfare is chock full of endless stories of new and innovative ways to end human life. But while there are endless ways people have tried to kill each other, there's just as many tales of people trying to avoid death! In Wacky War Tactics 4, we're looking at stories that DON'T involve killing the enemy. Psychological warfare was an important tool for the allies in the Pacific, a theater of war famous for its unrelenting misery and fights lasting to the last man. With the sheer brutality of the island hopping campaigns, it was much preferable to damage enemy morale to the point of surrender so as the avoid fighting altogether. We also learn about the story of the HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen, a Dutch minesweeper looking to retreat from behind enemy lines in the Dutch East Indies. Where some might flee, and others might hide, the Crijnssen instead sought to do both: disguising her vessel as an island to avoid Japanese patrols. Sometimes, it's best to think of creative ways to NOT fight at all.
