Atoms are the foundation of chemistry. They are the basis for everything in the Universe. In this second unit of class 11 chemistry, we will learn the discovery of subatomic particles- electrons, neutrons, & protons, atomic models of J.J Thomson's, Rutherford's, Bohr's. We will learn the dual nature of light and electron, quantum mechanics, quantum numbers. We will also learn the rules for writing the electronic configurations of atoms.

Then, add or remove electrons depending on the ion's charge. For example, to find the configuration for the lithium ion (Li⁺), start with neutral lithium (1s²2s¹). Then, since the lithium ion has one less electron, remove an electron from the 2s subshell to get 1s². Sections: 00:00 - Introduction to electron configurations of ions 00:19 - Electron configuration of neutral fluorine 01:16 - Fluoride ion configuration (F⁻) 02:07 - Electron configuration of calcium ion (Ca²⁺) 02:51 - Using noble gas notation for calcium 03:36 - Ca²⁺ has same configuration as argon 03:44 - Encouragement to explore more ion configurations ------------------ Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
