In this video, we will understand why, unlike the s-block and p-block elements, the d-block elements exhibit a wide range of oxidation states that often differ by just one unit. We will also examine the most common oxidation states across the d-block and discuss the underlying reasons for their trends, why higher oxidation states are generally favored from scandium to manganese, while lower oxidation states become more stable from iron to zinc. Finally, we will explore why, in contrast to the p-block elements, the stability of higher oxidation states increases as we move down a group in the d-block.
